MilSim Spotlight: Knights of Ryxis

Welcome back to another edition of MilSim.io’s Community Spotlight. This time, we’re heading into the grim darkness of the far future to meet Knights of Ryxis, 1st Company, an Arma 3 community bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to life through immersive operations, persistent campaigns, and a healthy dose of community-driven storytelling.

Whether you’re a long-time Warhammer fan or someone who’s only recently discovered the universe, Knights of Ryxis offers a unique take on Arma’s MilSim experience that’s unlike anything found in more traditional military units.

🧠 Overview

Knights of Ryxis began life following the split from a long-running Garry’s Mod Warhammer 40K community, giving its members the opportunity to build something entirely their own. Since then, the community has grown into a welcoming group of Warhammer enthusiasts who enjoy everything from large-scale Arma operations to tabletop campaigns, development work, and simply hanging out together.

Their chapter is entirely homebrew; a successor chapter descended from the Blood Ravens. According to their lore, what was once the Blood Ravens’ Second Company became stranded within the Ryxis System after a catastrophic Warp Storm. Decades passed across the wider Imperium before they eventually emerged, declared long dead by their parent chapter. Rather than return, they forged a new destiny and founded their own Chapter: the Knights of Ryxis.

The result is a community that combines established Warhammer lore with its own evolving narrative, allowing members to help shape the chapter’s future through every campaign.

⚔️ Q&A with the Knights of Ryxis Leadership

🎯 What Makes Knights of Ryxis Different?

Rather than simply running standalone Arma operations, Knights of Ryxis has built an interconnected campaign experience spanning multiple games.

Their weekly Arma operations are complemented by Tabletop Simulator sessions that determine the outcome of wider space battles. Victories at the strategic level can directly influence the next ground campaign, including opportunities to board enemy vessels, capture them, and expand the chapter’s growing fleet.

Members can also volunteer for smaller Kill Team missions and participate in an internal Deathwatch program alongside players from other Warhammer communities.

The community also features persistent progression through relic weapons, relic armour, specialist qualifications, and unique character development. Should a character fall in battle during specific “Name Player Kill” missions, that marine is permanently lost—although the player’s earned ranks and awards remain.

⚔️ Why Warhammer 40,000?

The community’s roots have always been firmly planted within the Warhammer universe.

While the original group came from a Garry’s Mod 40K server, the release of newer editions of the tabletop game continues to introduce fresh players who discover both the hobby and the Arma community.

For the leadership, Warhammer offers an endless universe of stories, battles and opportunities for collaborative storytelling.

🎮 Operations & Playstyle

Knights of Ryxis hosts weekly operations every Friday at 6:00 PM EST, typically lasting around two hours.

Rather than following a linear campaign, the community currently operates a Crusade Rally System, allowing members to vote on where the Chapter deploys next. One week they may find themselves cleansing an Ork-held world; the next they could be hunting Heretic Astartes while avoiding the ever-present threat of Necrons or the T’au Empire.

The team strives for lore accuracy wherever possible while accepting that Arma’s Warhammer modding scene occasionally requires a little creative flexibility.

Current recruitment includes:

  • Intercessors
  • Suppressors
  • Breachers
  • Vanguard Marines
  • Apothecaries
  • Techmarines
  • Terminators (earned through progression)
  • Internal Deathwatch members

❓ How do you balance immersion with fun?

Rather than overwhelming new players with decades of Warhammer lore, Knights of Ryxis introduces it gradually.

Short lore briefings are delivered through their internal communication channels and operation orders, giving players the context they need without requiring encyclopaedic knowledge of the setting.

The priority is making sure everyone understands the mission, enjoys themselves, and isn’t left confused by either the lore, or the occasional mod bug.

❓ What’s been the biggest challenge in growing your community?

Like many MilSim communities, player retention has been the biggest obstacle.

The team recognised early that not everyone wanted to play genetically engineered super soldiers forever, so they introduced Squires, mortal vehicle crews responsible for operating the chapter’s ground and air assets. It adds more variety while giving members alternative ways to contribute.

❓ What’s one mistake you see new Warhammer communities make?

“The main mistake is being rail-roaded into the original legions and chapters with little to no variation.”

Knights of Ryxis believes there’s plenty of room within Warhammer’s universe to tell original stories, provided they’re grounded in the lore.

❓ What advice would you give to someone starting a community?

“Think small before getting into massive projects, especially if you’re the only one handling development for your mods or server.”

Building sustainable foundations first is far easier than trying to maintain an overly ambitious project with too few people.

❓ How do you approach recruitment and onboarding?

Every new recruit receives a gentle introduction to the Knights of Ryxis lore before joining operations.

Whether through voice chats, text discussions or casual conversations, the goal is helping players discover the Warhammer universe at their own pace rather than expecting prior knowledge.

❓ What’s been your proudest moment as a community?

Interestingly, it wasn’t a military victory.

Instead, the leadership points to the friendships built within the community and the support members show one another during important moments in real life.

One recent example was the overwhelming congratulations received when one of the community leaders announced their engagement, a reminder that communities are ultimately built around people first.

❓ What does the next year look like?

The roadmap includes:

  • More joint operations with other Warhammer 40K communities.
  • Continued expansion of their persistent fleet system through Tabletop Simulator.
  • Larger Deathwatch operations.
  • Additional Kill Team experiences.
  • Continued development of their custom mod and campaign systems.

⚡ Quickfire

Which faction would you fight alongside?

Blood Ravens—they’re the chapter that first got me into Warhammer 40K.

What’s your community’s favourite inside joke?

“Ryxian It.” (Usually involving everyone pulling out melee weapons or someone unexpectedly starting an aircraft.)

Give us a fun fact about your community.

They don’t steal equipment…

They simply strategically transfer it to an alternative location during joint operations.

📈 Key Takeaways for Other Units

  • Build a community, not just a server. Long-term friendships are what keep members coming back.
  • Don’t be afraid to create your own identity. Original lore can be just as engaging as established factions.
  • Think beyond Arma. Combining different games and persistent progression creates memorable long-term campaigns.
