MilSim Spotlight: 6th Airborne Division

Welcome back to another edition of MilSim.io’s Community Spotlight. Today we’re taking a look at 6th Airborne Division, a long-running Arma 3 MilSim community, and speaking with one of their leaders, McCarthy.

Established all the way back in 2008, the 6th Airborne Division has spent nearly two decades building a community focused on teamwork, professionalism, and immersive military gameplay. Longevity is something many MilSim communities aspire to, but few achieve, making the 6th an interesting example of how consistency and strong community culture can help a unit stand the test of time.

🧠 Overview

The 6th Airborne Division is a British-themed airborne infantry MilSim unit inspired by the historic 6th Airborne Division formed during the Second World War. While the real-world formation was eventually disbanded and absorbed into other units, the community continues to carry forward its legacy through immersive operations, structured training, and a strong focus on teamwork.

One thing that immediately stands out about the 6th is the depth of its organisation. Alongside its infantry platoon, the unit operates supporting aviation, signals, fire support, and sniper elements, creating opportunities for players to specialise and contribute in a variety of roles.

Behind the scenes, dedicated “Non-Combat Groups” help keep the community running, handling everything from mission creation and recruitment to training and technical support. It’s an approach that highlights the amount of work required to sustain a community over the long term and likely plays a large part in the unit’s continued success.

Q&A With McCarthy

🎯 What Makes 6th Different?

The 6th has been built on the understanding that when the going is tough or we are in contact, everyone has game faces on and pushes to do their best. In the lighter moments on patrol, we try to foster camaraderie within each element and have some fun along the way. We support this by putting immense effort outside of the game into building engaging missions, developing training plans, and hosting other community events to establish these principles.

We have an infantry and detachment approach to our operations. Alongside our infantry platoon, which operates using modern British tactics, we also have attached elements such as our 908 EAW flying squadron, signals detachment, fire support platoon, and sniper platoon.

Outside of operations we have our Non-Combat Groups (NCGs). These groups are responsible for many of the day-to-day functions necessary to keep the unit running, including technical support, mission making, recruitment, training, and specialist development.

🎮 Operations & Playstyle

The 6th Airborne Division runs two operation nights per week and places a strong emphasis on continuity between events. Rather than treating each operation as a standalone mission, the unit often runs persistent campaigns where progress carries forward from week to week.

  • Operation Frequency: Thursdays and Sundays
  • Typical Session: 19:45–22:00 UK Time
  • Structure: Infantry platoon supported by specialist detachments
  • Focus: Persistent campaigns, teamwork, and British military doctrine

We play on Thursdays from 19:45 UK time until around 22:00 and Sundays from 18:45 until around 22:00. We conduct a debrief after each operation to discuss the night’s events while they’re still fresh.

During campaigns we often remain deployed in the field between operations, resupplying and preparing for the next objective before saving progress. Our logistics elements work behind the scenes to support these deployments.

During home rotation periods we typically conduct live-fire training and field training exercises to reinforce lessons learned and develop our members’ skills.

We are always recruiting new infantry recruits who can progress through our training scheme. For newer players this provides a vital foundation for understanding our expectations and procedures, while experienced MilSim players gain familiarity with how we operate.

❓ What’s been the hardest part of running your unit as you’ve grown?

I recently became one of two main leaders of the 6th Airborne Division around six months ago, so I am still learning the answer to this question. However, I believe ensuring there is a shared vision and common understanding of what everyone wants to achieve is both the most difficult and most rewarding aspect of running a MilSim community.

❓ What’s one mistake you see new MilSim units make?

As a recruiter for the 6th for many years, I’ve seen a lot of communities change their identity frequently. If you believe in the idea you’ve created, stick with it and develop pride in what you’ve built. That confidence will naturally translate to your members when they join.

❓ What’s helped you stay active and consistent over 16 years?

The dedication of our members and the friendships formed outside of Arma have been the glue that has held the unit together. We’ve had different leaders, section commanders, and members over the years, but that sense of community has remained constant throughout my time here and before.

We are always looking for ways to improve our gameplay and keep things fresh for our members. We regularly introduce new ideas and dynamics to ensure operations remain engaging and enjoyable. Over the next year we plan to continue exploring new opportunities to improve the experience for everyone involved.

❓ How do you approach recruitment and onboarding?

We have created dedicated Non-Combat Groups that focus on both promoting the unit through various forms of media and subsequently training recruits to a level where they can comfortably integrate into our philosophy and style of gameplay.

❓ Give us a fun fact about your community

Many of our current and former members have gone on to serve in the British Armed Forces, either before, during, or after their time with the 6th Airborne Division.

📈 Key Takeaways for Other Units

  • Strong community culture helps units survive long beyond the average lifespan of most MilSim groups.
  • Behind-the-scenes support roles are just as important as frontline gameplay.
  • Consistency and clear identity often matter more than constantly reinventing your community.
  • Building genuine friendships outside of operations can significantly improve long-term retention.
